R&V Aqualine Industries founder, Robin Box, made his first kayak in 1976, and 38 years later, Safari H2O now produce a complete range of models for the sit-on-top, recreational, fishing and sea kayak market.

Having supplied kayaks to the Australian Olympic team for 12 years, Safari H2O are now a market leader in the industry, with popular models such as Murray Fishing, Drifter Plus, Skip and Breakwater.

And while the name Safari H2O has only been around since 2011, the company’s history goes a lot further back. Safari H2O is simply a result of four decades of hard work, and perfecting Australian designed and Australian made canoes and kayaks that are now market leaders.

Here’s the Safari H2O story ……

Robin Box was a second year Wangaratta High School student when he made his first fibreglass kayak in 1974. Under the guidance of teacher Andrew Blair, Robin would work during lunchtime and after school to complete the project that started his love affair with the paddling industry.

Thirty-nine years on, Robin still has that first kayak in his shed, but his products, and the way they are produced, have changed a lot since.

1985

First fibreglass canoes produced for customers.

1987

R&V Aqualine Industries formed. Developed a range of three canoes: Rapid Rider, River Rider and Sunseeker. Then started a range of kayaks, with the range continuing to grow.

1988

Started making slalom kayaks for the Australian Olympic team. The kayaks were lightweight, composite carbon fibre and Kevlar boats that were high tech. These boats continued to evolve through our manufacturing techniques, and in 1992 we supplied the boats that the Australian team paddled in the Barcelona Olympic Games. Danielle Woodward won a silver medal with the world’s first seamless kayak, and it gave her a major advantage at those Games, and was a significant milestone for R&V Aqualine Industries. Other manufacturers then copied that design.

During this period our products were sold through Canoes Plus in Melbourne.

1998

Our production changed to producing plastic boats as the industry was moving in that direction. Plastics were improving in their rigidity, so we could get the weight of our products down, comparable to what the composite boats were.

In white water products, plastic boats were a major breakthrough because they were rugged, durable and could take more abuse in those conditions. A lot of short play boats started to appear around this time.

1999

Formed a manufacturing agreement with US company Dagger Canoe Company, and had quite a comprehensive range of white water, sit on top and touring kayaks. Distributed through Velocity Water Sports.

During this time we developed boats specifically for the Australian conditions, which increased our range of Australian made boats.

2009

Contract moulded some of the Perception range of kayaks for the Australian market through to 2012.

2012

By 2012, most of our boats were Australian designed. The agreements with Dagger and Perception concluded and we started Safari H2O. Before this time, most people didn’t know that R&V Aqualine Industries were behind the boats previously made.

We have now developed a key team of staff with a passion for all types of padding, and are now designing and building Australian made kayaks. Having very well designed sit-on-tops can give you an uncompromised paddling experience, whereas typically that was only achieved with a sit-in kayak.  By surrounding ourselves with the right team and a great network of people involved at all levels of the industry, we will continue to develop products that the Australian paddler needs, and that they are well catered for.

We strive to be at the forefront of design, developing everything in house (development, pattern making and tooling), allowing us to control and alter products along the way, and test them on site.

Every new model must perform better than the model it’s replacing. We test our products against other popular models in the industry, go and paddle it and play around with our model until we’re happy that our boat is better.

We spend considerable time making hull changes to ensure that our boats perform to our acceptable standards. On some boats, as little as 10mm being added to, or taken from, the hull can have a huge impact on the performance of the boat. Unless we’re 100% happy, we won’t release the boat onto the market.

Polar experiences:

We have also recently worked with the world’s leading polar expeditionist, Eric Phillips from Polartech, to develop a sled specifically for polar conditions and for use on his Arctic expeditions.

To design and test the sled, the Safari H2O team used the same technology and research that they apply to all of their products, resulting in a sled that is more than capable of performing in such adverse conditions.

Looking ahead, Safari H2O will continue to be a market leader making products that paddlers want to use. And best of all, they will continue to be Australian designed and Australian made.
